LO4: Evaluation

The purpose of my magazine is to get young people 16+ to explore exactly what Sheffield has to offer. Whether this be new students to the area or simply just those local whom are looking for some different things to try out in their free time. However mainly the focus is to engage younger people in educational activities, music events and introduce them to the cities favored eateries, but above all to inspire them to make a difference. Some sections of the magazine are to be used for guidance to those reading, with small sub sections on life at college/university and related scenarios such as mental/sexual health and events happening in the area. The magazine is aimed toward the C2DE social group, the justification for this is that students and young people rarely have a high disposable income due to other commitments or simply lack of employment hence why promotional material for the magazine will include money off vouchers or free admission to events. The brief set by SPH (sheffield publishing house) was to make a Sheffield magazine, i chose a entertainments magazine.

As part of the production of this magazine i have created a double page spread , contents and cover page which have given insight into what is available in the magazine and clear conventions of the

genre. For this i chose my star persona, Abby Betts - a young female Sheffield born musician, i took photographs of her in the style of other magazines and have used her likeness on all of the pages to create inference as to what is on the double page spread. On my front cover as said in my proposal i have placed my star persona central to the page and large to connote her importance in this issue of the magazine. In aim to make my magazine hold more resemblance to other well known magazines of the same/similar genre i changed my original masthead ideas to a bold sans serif black font featuring a line running behind anf through the text which was drawn exactly to the route the 120 sheffield bus takes hence tying in the name of the magazine with other well known sheffield systems.

The image for the front cover was taken portrait with a shallow depth of field to connote importance whilst also having a sense of intimacy between the reader and the star which will be particularly favoured by teenagers aged 16 as specified as part of the age range. I chose Abby with the view that she would be highly relatable for young people who are currently finding education difficult, within the body copy for the double page spread this is made more obvious when she is talking about education and spurring others like herself on to greatness. This provides the 'ideal' self which is so commonly favoured in magazines of this type as young people will want to have the same aspirations as this woman - and it is likely given with the target audience they will be around the same age.

Throughout the production i have adhered to the house style i proposed to use from the outset, using colours associated with the various forms of public transport Sheffield has to offer which helps associate choice of name. I purposely used a plum/pink which is generally associated with being daring , with occasional flashes of grey to connote the industrial heritage of the city (steel city), i have also used yellow which connotes a sense of rejuvintion and happiness whilst also relating strongly to the 'yellow route' tram line . By using both pink and yellow i have related strongly to both males and females especially given yellow being a stereotypical unisex colour - these colours have been used throughout the pages i have made in order to create synergy. The link to the use of public transport will appeal directly to the C2DE social grading of which this magazine will be most popular as it is more than likely that they will be frequent benefactors of it. The use of the colour purple as mentioned before is meant to connote the magazine is daring and in somewhat outspoken which is reflected in the 'your say' section on the contents page , this will further encourage young women in particular to have a voice and speak out. Because my target audience runs up to and past 18 years of age, i have appealed directly to this by creating banners on winning nights out in sheffield, 'with venues exclusive to ONE20', this gives a personalised feel to the magazine which will be favoured by the older end of the target audience

The top column of colours allowed me to refer back to my
house style and make sure the right colours were being
repeated.
Alongside the content on the cover page of my magazine, I have included into my contents page headings which relate not only to the cover page , but the double page spread also - this is again adhering to conventions of a standard magazine as this level of continuity would be expected throughout. In addition to this, the headers on the content page also clarify the genre as they include reference to local places of interest and local dialect, this will appeal directly to the target audience as there is some level of humour what with use of local dialect words such as 'reyt' and colloquial language is often a common way of communication between young people - This has made the magazine more tailored to the needs of the target audience and brief.
During the production of my contents page, i kept in contact with the brief by continuing to use the house style colours, i used the swatch tool on Adobe Photoshop to ensure that my colours stayed the exact same throughout all of the pages. As planned on my contents page i have included snippets of information for other pages implied within the first issue of the magazine this is again to reinforce that the magazine is based around Sheffield as the brief required and covers a variety of topics much like a local entertainments magazine would be. On my cover page i created banners intended to draw in the target audience , giving the opportunity to win a night out, and a chance to headline the Leadmill which are both things in reference to the reader profile that a ONE20 reader would be attracted by. To create these banners i simply used the rectangle tool, and the paint bucket again using the swatch tool to refer to the correct colour to create synergy.

I have rearranged the layers in InDesign
so that the star persona is in front of the
text - this connotes importance
My double page spread features a Sheffield born cover artist wearing an outfit of her choice as to encourage self expression, this provides a sense of leadership for young people to follow. The star has been posed to the right of the body copy large to connote importance, the size of the image is important as it has enabled her to look directly at the pull quote from the interview. The image has been taken in a photographic studio on a white background to help her stand out against the other daring colours used as part of the house style. The cover lines have been written in a bold black sans serif font with emphasis on the word 'Glastonbury' which has been done in a different colour with a drop shadow of the same house style colours. The fact this word has been done in yellow connotes that this is a star event which further implies the model is a star, the fact it glows to give a 3D effect brings it closer to the reader and has been done so to draw the music lovers into the main body copy. The pull quote featured as the cover line 'I'd snatch the hands off glastonbury if i were selected' shows to other young people that this girl close to living her dreams and although she is still in education, has set her sights as high as Glastonbury festival. On my double page spread i added multiple transparent rectangles in house style colours as seen on the WePop example of Cher Lloyd, it is important that i followed these conventions as the target audience of WePop is similar to that of ONE20 what with it being primarily female. I created these in photoshop using the opacity and rectangle tools - i again used the colour watching tool to keep the shades of pink/purple and yellow the same throughout the entirety of the magazine.

I used the Drop shadow effect on the cover lines to make the word 'Glastonbury' stand out and appear to be three dimensional.

To get this glow i maintained a small size and spread so that the purple stayed close to the lettering all the way around. This catches the attention of the readers and reinforced the genre.

Throughout the process of creating my magazine , Some elements were subject to change to further adapt to suit the target audience. On my original annotated visualisation diagrams, I outlined plans for how the magazine would look in terms of layout, this changed when further analysing other magazines of a similar genre and target audience as it was seemingly fitting to take elements from successful existing publications to make mine as authentic as possible. This meant changing the ideas for my photoshoot, I still took a variety of images, however composed them as to pastiche existing examples.

LO4: Sub editing

LO3: Body Copy for Article

Trying to establish a career in music is becoming all the more difficult what with Wolf Alice and Alexandra Saviour dominating the female artist scene, however that doesn't stop Abby Betts who Is making a breakthrough, feisty as ever!

The young songstress is trying to prove the possibility of studying with the aim of studying Biomedical science at university which is 'an ambition' of hers and balancing all this around her rapidly developing musical career. 'I do feel like my two sixth form years have really limited my time' she says , 'I keep thinking I'll have the most creative summer once exams are over' - sounds like this woman has got her head screwed on , right?

When asked where she believed her passion for music came from, the answer was plain to see , 'I was about twelve, my grandparents bought me an acoustic guitar' she continued to say ' I took to it incredibly quickly soon covering songs that everyone and their dogs knew,'  'then came the song writing and the local gigs, madness!'. What with the musical career being as demanding as ever, it requires women in particular to provide guidance to other young budding artists with a lot of pressure being put on household names such as Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry who have both recently been under fire for the way they present themselves to young fans. That being said,  Abby claims she blames the fact 'there's many few of us , Girl Power!' . Abby's personal advice is for 'budding chemists, keep persevering - if you're good at it you're blessed', ' and then to fellow young musicians, I admire you !' - we cant say fairer than that can we?

Festivals are a major part of all of music lovers , however for young artists they are a gateway for further gigs and recognition. Back in 2011, Ed Sheeran Headlined the BBC introducing tent at Glastonbury with his debut single 'A-team' which in coming years has gone on to sell 2.3 million copies in the US alone. This dream is no different for Abby who told ONE20 'I'd snatch the hands off Glastonbury if I was ever selected' and undoubtedly she would follow the pathway of her fellow musicians straight to the 'introducing' stage with her EP.

SHeffield itself is a muscial hive, and the scene is only expanding what with artists like abby causing a riot in local clubs and pubs - the same which multi-platinum sheff band Artic monkeys started out gigging in. Just like alex turner and his lads, we expect abby to be following this same track to success and you heard it here first. Abby’s most recent ep ‘french kiss’ features a collaboration with another fresh artist on the south yorkshire music scene. It won’t be long now until you see this lass shredding the pyramid stage.

LO3: Following codes and conventions

Following Codes & Conventions in the making of ONE 20 Magazine

IMAGES

For the production of ONE 20 i conducted a photoshoot in the style of other relative magazines such as NME, Q and EXPOSED. The thing that the majority of these magazines had in common was that the main cover image is given a lot of presence on the cover, therefore when shooting images for my own front cover i decided to do the majority of the images with a standard portraiture lens to give the same intimate connection with the person the reader will be learning about. I have also positioned all text for the front cover over the image of the main cover artist with the intention of framing it such as demonstrated by the creator of this particular NME page. I have also posed the model so that she is looking directly at the person who picks up the magazine which again forms a bond between the reader and the brand , this will also tie in any other images or text on the page, making the magazine feel tailored to the needs of the young , student target audience.

VERSION CONTROL 3 OF MAGAZINE

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD IMAGE AND ADDITIONAL IMAGES TO SUPPLEMENT

Original un edited image

contents page I created for ONE220
contents page from exposed

For my contents page i followed the conventions of Exposed magazine by selecting one large image which has resemblance to the main cover story and double page spread. I also included other additional images as shown in the example from the Exposed magazine, however I included various different images so that it is made completely clear that my magazine is a local Sheffield entertainments magazine - this is done by using images from local well known places and will appeal directly to the target audience. I decided to create synergy i should use similar images of the main cover star on all pages, the intention of this is to direct the reader toward the main double page spread story.

Example from We Pop magazine
DPS created for ONE20

For my Double page spread i decided to shoot an image similar to the example from WePop magazine in order to make it clear and concise who the article is about. I purposely chose this image from my contact sheet as the composition means that the star persona is looking directly at the pull quote from the article which she participated in , in form of the interview. This draws attention to both the cover line and 'Glastonbury' due to it being in a different colour (and drop shadow). The composure of this image reflects the personality of the star persona and defines her as an artist due to it connoting she has a laid back , yet dominant approach to her musical career (hands on sides reflects this).

BODY COPY

Due to my magazine being aimed at young students, I have intentionally made sure that my article is coded restrictively as to convey the meaning of the article without confusion. As a part of this i have used local dialect words such as 'lad', 'lass' and 'reyt' which will again geographically place the content of the magazine for the reader and further encourage students originally from other areas around the UK to join in and assoicate themselves further with the place they are studying. Colloquial language such as mentioned above is also strongly associated with young people therefore will directly appeal to my 16-24 demographic as mentioned in my proposal. The layout of the body copy is also very similar to examples from Wepop as it wraps around the images and other features of the magazine pages showing that conventions have been thought of throughout the production process.

LAYOUT

I have adhered to the codes and conventions stereotypical of a layout of an entertainments/ music magazine. I have placed the masthead i have designed at the top left hand corner of the page much like an NME magazine. In this example the masthead is partially obscured by the head of the model, however in my case i have had to make the masthead fully visible as the magazine would not yet be developed enough in the first issue for the audience to recognise the house style with the brand name. Like this edition of kerrang, my front cover image does not obscure any of the models face as to not take focus away from it, therefore the headline is placed across the chest of the model on her black jumper which helps not only the composition across the full page , but allows each letter to stand out and present itself which makes for easy reading by the audience. For my double page spread i looked closesly at the WePop magazine featuring Cher Lloyd and chose to position the image as to ensure the star persona was looking directly at the pull quote from the body copy, this connotes the star is supportive of the content of the article and therefore is proud of her response. Making it so that the star persona has a full side of the double page spread connotes importance, also this makes clear that the star is going to become a big deal over the next couple of years.

Likewise I have taken inspiration from another local Sheffield magazine Exposed for the contents page for my magazine. I have done this by including a large picture of the star persona to link to content further on in the magazine which creates synergy with both the front cover and also coerces the reader into looking at the main article. Other images which feature on this page are given less presence to draw the readers attention to the main asset and storyline of this issue. To follow magazine conventions as a whole I have included numbers for additional pages, this includes bold headers to draw attention to seperate sections of the magazine which would be present in a full issue. It was made obvious through looking at other examples of magazine contents pages that they feature at least three columns of text , as this is a common convention i included this in my own work however reduced the column sizes by making images of local places of interest overlap - this again reinforces the genre of the magazine.

I also took inspiration from exposed in terms of framing the content on both the double page spread and contents page with rectangle graphics in house style colours, this draws attention to the information and images on the page and additionally shows the reader where all the important information relevant to the stories is. On the double page spread , i have also made the cover line lay behind the main image which connotes her importance in terms of the body copy - This also makes her closer to the reader which adds a more personal effect.

GRAPHICS

On the double page spread i have included transparent graphics like given on the WePop double page spread, these have been created in the same colours as featured on the Contents and cover page to create synergy. These colours appeal both to a male and female target audience with purple which is a stereotypically a feminine colour and yellow a unisex one. This also keeps in contact with my original idea from the proposal which states that colours from the magazine should be recognised from the transport systems in sheffield - yellow and purple are popular tram routes in and out of the city and are also featured on the two main bus companies including the 120. On my cover page, i chose to use rectangular graphics to draw attention to other content in the magazine around the 'food, flicks, free' slogan - as the cover image is large it is important to draw attention to other features of the magazine which would be featured on similar issues such as NME or Exposed. Also on the contents page, there are graphics to draw attention to the different parts of the magazine which make it local such as reference to the local Showroom cinema, Tamper coffee shop and art. These also include as mentioned above local dialect.

COVER LINES

For the cover line on my double page spread article i chose to feature a pull quote from the interview section of the magazine, as this gives an insight into the tone of the article and encourages the reader to look for where the quote has originated from. I specifically chose this quote as it features the well known music festival 'Glastonbury' and gives an inclination as to what the article is about given that the full magazine isn't specifically indie rock. Referring to the reader profile, the average ONE20 reader will be passionate about music in particular festivals therefore this will appeal directly to them. Purposely the word Glastonbury has been written in a different colour to draw attention to it for this specific reason however also connotes that this girl is soon to become a star due to the colour yellow being associated with gold and stars among young people. In addition to this on the front cover of my magazine i have used alliteration of the letter C as seen on the kerrang example with R, this additionally sheds light on the words 'college' and 'coping' which is key as in the proposal for this magazine, it is outlined that it is aimed to give guidance and reassurance to teens and young adults when it comes to education. On the contents page of my magazine , there is an additonal cover line which features a play on words, the image features the young star blowing glitter confetti - this is a convention used commonly among magazine producers therefore will be recognised and appriciated by my audience whilst again drawing attention to the images and double page spread content.

MODE OF ADDRESS

My magazine has a peer to peer mode of address due to its colloquial language aimed at students and general northern young people, the dialect in the body copy of the text such as 'everyone and their dogs' which is used in the interview section of my double page spread, this would not be used in any other mode of address as the tone of both teacher to pupil and parent to child are primarily formal. Other musical magazines such as NME use these less formal modes which often include explicit language - again stereotypical of Peer to Peer. On the contents page for my magazine i have featured local dialect such as 'reyt' and 'nosh' which could be deemed comical and relative to the people reading. This ensures that the coding of the magazine remains restricted and suitable for the target audience much like kerrang and NME do for their readers.

LO4: Exporting final magazine pages

When saving and exporting my Cover page of my magazine, I saved the file as a TIFF. Other magazines  such as NME and local Sheffield magazine Exposed save files as TIFFs as they are lossless high quality files ideal for printing. For my contents page and double page spreads, I exported them in Adobe Photoshop as PDF files as they are lossless files and allow the images on the page to keep their quality throughout the printing process. Adobe photoshop is a industrial grade editing software therefore these files are the best suited for this type of production.

Because the magazine is intended for students it is important to distribute in areas where it would be easily accessible for them to grab a copy, ideally this would be around the two large university campus’ in nearby shops, restaurants and clothing stores as in relation with the student life comes the ability to explore your surroundings and try new things. Around Sheffield there are numerous live music venues such as The Leadmill, Sheffield O2 academy and Bungalow and bears which allow small amounts of print around the building for example on tables near the bars which would be an ideal place to have copies of One20 as it would contain features of up and coming local musicians and venues in which to see them – therefore the perfect captive audience.
The main areas for distribution would cover S1,S10,S2 and S11 as this is where a high population of students live and visit during their social times – this runs through the city centre and both University campus’ where it is more likely that the target audience of the magazine will have access to a copy. The train station is also a very busy area populated with many students as it serves as the Sheffield Hallam University tramstop and the area that students will pass through on their way to either Sheffield Hallam or the University of Sheffield therefore an ideal place to distribute copies of the magazine. By printing the magazine using these file types, it would allow the magazine to be printed in these high quality lossless formats.
